The Fox ‘n’ Hound is a Saratoga Bed and Breakfast inn that is proud of its
city’s history and heritage. Situated in the
southern Adirondack foothills of Upstate NY,
Saratoga Springs NY continues to commemorate
its wonderful past.
The First Known Settlers
Saratoga Springs New York was first populated by the
Iroquois Indians who called the area
Sarachtogue. Due to the close proximity of
the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, the Indians
came to the area for fur trading. The
saline (a natural sanitizer) and minerals
found in the effervescent springs led to
gorgeous furs. The mineral
springs were also considered to have healing
powers – many of the Iroquois’ used them for
medicinal purposes.
Period of American Colonization
Saratoga Springs grew rapidly as American
colonization took over the land. The
American Revolution fought significant
battles on Saratoga’s soil including the
Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the
Revolutionary War. Once populated with dense
forestry, American settlers soon cleared the
area and lumbered for timber. This timber
was then distributed via the Hudson River.
The tanning industry also grew during this
period due to the influx of mills populating
the county.
The Glamour Years
The popularity of the active mineral springs
and mineral bathhouses attracted the
fashionable upper class society of the
northeast to
Saratoga
Springs and Ballston Spa in the 19th
Century. These two villages soon went by the
name as the “Queen of the Spas” adding to
its aura of class and sophistication. The
famed Saratoga Race Course also drew record
crowds when its gates first opened in 1863.
Some of the famous people that have strolled
through Saratoga include Andrew Jackson,
Franklin Pierce, J.P. Morgan, “Diamond Jim”
Brady, as well as many elite family names
such as the Whitney’s, Rockefeller’s and
Vanderbilt’s.
